A simple geometric composition. Jules Engel (1909-2003) was a filmmaker, painter, sculptor, graphic artist, set designer, animator, film director, and teacher. He is perhaps best known for his work as an animator for Walt Disney and other Hollywood studios, contributing to many films including Fantasia and Bambi, as well as animated cartoon television shows such as Madeline and Mr. Magoo. Throughout in his career, he produced individual works and animated shorts in a geometric minimalism style exemplified by this piece. He was an instructor and mentor at California Institute of the Arts in the film and video department for over 30 years. In his lifetime, Engel created 33 personal films, 39 editions of lithographs, hundreds of paintings and sculptures beginning in the 1930s. In 1945, Hazel Guggenheim arranged for his first exhibition at the Frederick Kahn Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1969, Engel became the Founding Director of CalArts Animation Program; subsequently becoming the Founding Director of the Experimental Animation Department in the School of Film and Video. Engel's department became known for its animation teaching. CalArts, located in Valencia California, is the first higher education institution in America to offer a formal degree in animation.In 1973, Engel self-published a collection of typographic art, entitled 'Oh'. During the 23rd Annual Annie Awards, in 1995, he received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifetime contributions to the field of animation. He was also recipient of five Golden Eagle awards, the Fritz Award, the Norman McLaren Heritage Award, and the Pulcinella Award for career achievement.
