SummaryMICHELANGELO THE PAINTER-a sumptuous feast for the eye-makes of each reader a witness to the glory and the power of the paintings of this great artist. All of Michelangelo's paintings are reproduced in colorplates of superlative quality; a full dozen are double-page spreads. The great Sistine Chapel is shown more fully than it has ever been in one volume. Many of the elements are more visible here than in the Chapel itself, for in addition to full views we are shown individual scenes and closeup details. There are parts of the Chapel which we might miss as we stand far below--the smaller triangular vaults above the windows, the bronze-painted medallions, the lunettes around the windows-for the magnificent center of the Ceiling is usually more than enough for the viewer to absorb. Yet all of these areas display Michelangelo's genius, and all can be fully admired in these superb and truthful illustrations. The same is true of the Last Judgment, the mighty fresco that covers the wall behind the altar and contains Michelangelo's interpretation of the ultimate fate of mankind. The multitude of figures swirls up from the ground to Christ's right hand and descends inexorably on the other side; to assimilate this panoply of poignant expressions and poses requires study and time, and detailed colorplates of the kind this volume provides. And the great frescoes of Michelangelo's later years, the two walls of the Pauline Chapel, have never been so splendidly reproduced as here. His power does not lapse, though he was sixty-five when he began them; rather, his painting is suffused with a new range of color that makes the broad compositions bloom with unforgettable force. About the AuthorProfessor Valerio Mariani, of the University of Naples, is a well-known authority on Mi-chelangelo. He has written a text that accounts fully for the circumstances of Michelangelo's great paintings, and interprets these vast works for the reader in many ways. He has added a chronology and bibliography for the reader's convenience, and includes full-page illustrations of the artist's drawings, many in color, that enrich our comprehension of Michelangelo's lasting genius Purchase information**When you purchase this item, Phoenix Forward Furnishings will donate 10% of the final purchase price to the American National Red Cross charity.
