Vanilla pompona, also known as vanillón (big vanilla), vainilla platanito (banana vanilla), vainilla gruesa (thick vanilla) or West Indian vanilla, is cultivated in Mexico, but can occasionally be found in some other South American countries. While this is a rare variety of vanilla, it has long been appreciated and protected by Mexican vanilla growers who prize it for personal use. The green pods are short and round and look similar to bananas (hence their nickname). The Latin name pompona, comes from the word pompa which means pretentious or parade, and refers to the plants’ large, showy flowers. The pods take a much longer time to cure compared to the planifolia beans because of their plump nature. The cured vanilla beans are shorter and fatter than planifolia vanilla and have a penetrating, exotic aroma akin to sweet, creamy marshmallows. Their overall scent is more perfumy and floral than planifolia and one can detect undernotes of cherries and figs *If you would like to purchase a larger number of pompona beans, please contact us for special pricing. PACKAGING:Your vanilla bean will come in a vacuum-sealed package to maintain moisture and freshness. STORAGE:Vanilla beans should be kept in a cool, dark place. The area should also be kept dry to prevent any molding. We suggest that you store your beans in a plastic container, bag, or glass jar. If you live in a humid area, you may want to wrap the beans in parchment paper before placing them in the storage container. Do NOT refrigerate or freeze vanilla beans. This will cause the beans to become damaged. In addition, keep them away from the oven or stove as they will dry out more quickly. FINE PRINT:Each vanilla bean is UNIQUE in length and weight. Please note that your vanilla beans may look slightly different than the ones pictured here. However, we do our best to provide you with a product that accurately resembles what you see. We cannot guarantee that these vanilla beans are certifiably peanut-free or gluten-free. However, our facility is certified by the PA Department of Agriculture.
