The character was also the basis of various film, television, and comic book adaptations. In the history of crime fiction, he represents a transition from Gothic novel villains of the 19th century to modern-day serial killers and supervillains.Fantomas, the elegant menace was a classic Mexican comic series, popular throughout Latin America, published in Mexico during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by Editorial Novaro. Based on the serial Fantômas by Allain and Souvestre, it was apparently made with the idea of using the same character, but readapted to a heroic version, without the recognition or influence of the original books or films. It was made with legal authorization by Editorial Novaro and rights reserved. Later Editorial Vid acquired the publishing rights.Editorial NovaroThe character debuted in issue 103 of Editorial Novaro's Tesoro de Cuentos Clásicos, on January 3, 1966. He continued to appear in this series until issue 136. The first issue as an independent magazine was published on January 1, 1969 by the same publisher and continued to appear every two weeks until number 202. It was subsequently presented in three sizes: Ostrich (large), Eagle (medium) and Hummingbird ( little). The longest-lasting edition was the Águila series, which ran from number 203 to 732. In Spain, the publication of anthologies was agreed with Novaro, thus appearing the so-called “Book Comics”, which were a reissue of old Novaro publications, published in 64-page format with hard cover (cardboard) and new covers made by Edmundo López and Ignacio Palencia.
