Most of his works have an undertone of suffering and combine dark imagery pulled from the subconscious combining multiple layers of meaning. At age 20 he held his first exhibition, and met baker-poet J.V. Foix , the poet and playwright Joan Brossa, critic and philosopher Arnau Puig, Enric Tormo and typographer attended the gathering "La Campana". He presented his first solo exhibition in 'Living Art' of Bilbao. In 1947 he founded the magazine "Algol" (which would appear a unique number) accompanied by Francesc Boadella, Joan Brossa, Mercadé Jordi Arnau Puig and Enric Tormo. This ephemeral magazine would be the embryo of a more important, "Dau al Set", which he became editor. From this publication the eponymous art group was formed. After a brief stay in Paris with Joan Miró, a mention in the Bienal de São Paulo in 1955 gave him a scholarship to study in Brazil, where he founded the "L'Espai" group. In the same year he founded the "Taüll" group with Antoni Tàpies, Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Josep Guinovart, Jaume Muxart, Mercadé and Joan-Josep Tharrats. Joan Ponc has exhibited all over the world including Barcelona, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Germany, Geneva, Tokyo and Madrid. His works are held both in major collections and by major museums.
