Description: For sale – 1/72 scale resin replacement nose for Anigrand resin kit. The original Anigrand fuselage is badly misshapen. So why not chop it up and drop a P-51D nose into it? When the TG-100 turboprop engine was not ready in time for initial flight tests, Convair decided to temporarily use a Merlin engine in its place. This led to one of the weirdest mash-ups of the era. They actually took the whole nose of a Merlin-powered P-51D and grafted it into the XP-81. A very strange-looking aircraft, although not even close to being the ugliest prototype of its day. The XP-81 tail surfaces went through several revisions over time so with this offering I am providing the tall rectangular tail. If you want the tall round tail instead, send me a message when you purchase. I haven’t seen any pictures of the Merlin with the round tail, so I don’t know if that would be correct or not. Otherwise I will send the tall rectangular tail. It is a little wider than the rudder, so trim it so it lines up with the top of the rudder. This offering also includes the ventral radiator housing for the Merlin cooling system. I would suggest making the exhaust door out of thin sheet brass. The XP-81 also had a very unusual set of wing tanks. They are just big streamlined lumps that hang down from the wings. Port and starboard are identical and are included in this set. So this includes the nose, spinner, radiator housing, tall rectangular tail, canopy, vinyl windshield paint mask, turtledeck (panel behind pilot seat) and wing tanks for the early XP-81. This is major surgery on your Anigrand kit. For experienced modelers only – will require some skill to pull off well! The nose section stops at the firewall, so the cockpit (which I had never modified anyway) is not included - you only need to cut off the engine from the Anigrand kit. I also have a replacement nose for the standard TG-100 powered XP-81. Inquire if interested (I plan on listing it in the near future). I no longer offer the complete fuselage (I would suggest just rounding off the rectangular jet intakes a bit to make the aft fuselage more realistic - other than that the aft fuselage is fine as-is).
