As in the First Series, published in 1848 and written in opposition to the Mexican-American War and the expansion of slavery, the Second Series is presented as a series of letters and verse by the New England farmer Hosea Biglow and his friend Birdofredom Sawin, and is embellished with a faux critical apparatus by editor Homer Wilbur, Pastor of the First Church of Jaalam.
