Description: Antique Japanese export cake plate / handled platter from Meiji period, ca. late 1800s, approximately 1887-1888.Made and exported by Shimamura, signed with a blue mark on the underside. Shimamura & Co. had a retail shop in Atlantic city, NJ in 1888. Later, Shimamura and partners opened a shop in New York and participated in World Trade Fairs, including 1904 in St Louis. Approximate measurements are 11 inches wide handle to handle, 10.25 inches plate diameter, 1.25 inches height. Excellent condition, free of chips, cracks or repairs. A rounded scrape on the underside of the platter possibly represents a part of manufacturing imperfections of the time. The platter is beautifully hand painted with stylized colorful birds and pink prunus flowers over a light green ground, accented with enamels, decorated with gentle multicolor pallet and embossed porcelain and raised enameled jewels border.
