Size: 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches; 2 pounds. Britain’s myths and legends contain many different ideals of heroism. Beowulf demonstrates sheer physical valor. Robin Hood a bold defiance of injustice. Hereward the Wake a patriotic resistance to tyranny. While the Countess Cathleen depicts an act of noble self-sacrifice and compassion for her people. In each story there appears the ideal hero as pictured in the mind of early medieval Britain. The British are a mixed people, tribes and races superimposed by waves of invasion, Celts, Romans, Saxons, Danes and Normans; and these people brought their own heroes and special ingredients to add to the British mythologies. The legends of Beowulf and Havelok epitomized the ideals of the Danes. In the popular Icelandic saga of Howard the Half, a story of vengeance and the blood feud, the Viking element is commemorated. The Normans brought their ideal of feudal loyalty in the image of Roland. The Norman conquest revived, unified, and solidified the English nation. But it also helped the appreciation of the heroism of revolt against tyranny as seen in Hereward the Wake, Robin Hood, and William of Cloudeslee, an outlaw who always possessed a potent charm. Less well known, but as heroic as Robin Hood, he was the William Tell of England. Famous as an archer, yeoman and patriot, and to the poor he was a real embodiment of the spirit of liberty. Robin Hood’s reputation endures to this day. In Medieval England he was credited with every daring deed and every magnanimous action conceivable. In “Myths and Legends of the British”, these stories, dating from the eighth century onward, have been presented in a version to appeal to the modern reader. Some are well-known, others are less so, such as the Irish stories of “Chuchulain, The Champion of Ireland”, and “The Countess Cathleen”, a mystic story of the supernatural. “The Tale of Gamelyn” provides an interesting precursor to Robin Hood. And a Scottish hero is here too, in the person of “Black Colin of Loch Awe”. A total of sixteen stories are included, and the author traces their probably origins and evolution. Sixty-four full-page illustrations accompany the narrative. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Unread(?) but cosmetically "impaired" hardcover w/dustjacket. Bracken Books (1992) 374 pages. Book appears to have been merely flipped through a few times, but never read cover to cover. Outside however the book does suffer from some cosmetic "impairments". There exists lots of tiny, tan-colored age speckles (known as "foxing") to the surfaces of the closed page edges (visible only when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges, sometimes referred to as the "page block"). Inside the book is almost perfect, except that the front and back end papers (the first and last blank, unprinted pages in the book) also evidence a little bit of foxing at the extremeties, along the page edges. Otherwise the inside of the book is almost pristine; pages clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, and seemingly unread, though clearly it has been flipped through a few times. However there's no substantive reading where evidenced anywhere beyond the first few pages of the book. I'd guess it was started a few times, but never actually read cover to cover, eventually relegated essentially unread to a book shelf. At the very worst it's been read once by someone with a very light hand, but I really don't believe so. The book evidences only mild edge and corner shelfwear to the dustjacket and covers, no tears, no chips, etc., of any substance, just mild edge and corner shelfwearGiven the cosmetic blemishes to the book it certainly lacks the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy", nonetheless as a buget-priced "reading copy", it is otherwise clean and only lightly read. For those not concerned with whether the book will or will not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it's a solid reading copy at an attractive price, inside the book is exceptionally clean and likely unread, merely flipped through and/or started a few times. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: [Author’s Preface] In refashioning for the pleasure of the modern reader these version of ancient tales which have given pleasure to story-lovers of all centuries, I feel that some explanation of my choices are necessary. Man’s conception of the heroic changes with the advancing years, and vary with each individual mind. Hence it often happens that one person sees in a legend only the inartistic details of a medieval life which tend to disguise and warp the heroic quality. It may be that to some people the heroes I have chosen do not seem heroic. But there is no doubt that to the age and generation which wrote of sang of them, they appeared real heroes, worthy of remembrance and celebration. It has been my object to come as close as possible to the medieval mind, with its elementary conceptions of honor, loyalty, devotion and duty. I have therefore altered the tales as little as I could, and have tried to present them as fairly as possible before modern readers, bearing in mind that the altered conditions of things and of intellects today. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: REVIEW: The writer retells for modern readers the legends and stories which have given pleasure to story-lovers of all centuries from the eighth onward. Men's conceptions of the heroic change with changing years, and vary with each individual mind; hence it often happens that one person sees in a legend only the central heroism, while another sees only the inartistic details of medieval life which tend to disguise and warp the heroic quality. There is no doubt that to the age and generation which wrote or sang of them they appeared real heroes, worthy of remembrance and celebration. With a glossary and index. REVIEW: Sixteen stories from the eighth century onward representing Britain's myths and legends, with explanatory material. Includes Beowulf, Cuchulain, and Robin Hood. Courageous and honorable, compassionate and strong, the heroes of British myth and legend remain powerful symbols of our national pride. READER REVIEW: REVIEW: This entry in the "Myths and Legends" series is slotted as the "British" volume; however it covers a wide range of Northern European legends, including Beowulf, Roland, Cuchulain and Robin Hood. With legends from Iceland, Spain, Ireland and Constantinople, the common theme here is not “British” legends per se, but heroic characters from the dark and middle ages. Notably, Ebbutt includes a number of memorable heroines as well, including the Irish Countess Cathleen, who bargained her soul to relieve a famine, the 'Loathly Lady,' redeemed by the love of Sir Gawain, and Rymenhild, who (uncharacteristically for the genre) seduces the Childe Horn, motivating his story arc towards knighthood. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). All domestic shipments and most international shipments will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). A small percentage of international shipments may require an additional fee for tracking and/or delivery confirmation. If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $9.99 to $37.99 for an insured shipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers. All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most international) shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
