The first plane was delivered in 1925. Western Air Express and National Air Transport, now Western Airlines and United Airlines, respectively, operated the Mailplane on combined mail and passenger flights beginning in 1926. These Liberty-powered biplanes were capable of carrying1000-pound payloads for 400 miles. Seven hundred similar aircraft were built for the U.S. Army Air Service, Mexico and China.
