The plants leaf measures 2.5 inches (6.35 cm)!Mazon Creek is a fossil site located in Illinois that dates to about 300 million years ago! It is world renowned for fossils of things that usually decompose quickly, like fern fronds, worms, jellyfish, and other soft tissue preserved in ironstone concretions in exquisite detail! Ferns are one of the oldest groups of plants. Seed Ferns are an extinct variety that reproduced through seeds rather than spores like other ferns. They first appeared over 370 million years ago and went extinct about 50 million years ago! Macroneuropteris was a huge seed fern that would have looked like a cross between a regular fern and a tree.
