His work has affinities with Expressionism and, in the 1920s, with Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). However, he remains an isolated figure in early twentieth-century European art. Many of his most extraordinary masterpieces, including most of his triptychs, were created while living in exile in Amersterdam between 1937 and 1947.
