Description: This is a Matthew Boulton Commemorative Medal After G.F. Pigeon c.1819. Struck by the Soho Mint, Birmingham on the tenth anniversary of Boulton's death. Reverse side Latin as per photos ("It is beneficial to have improved (human) life through discovered arts") "Inventas aut qui vitam excoluere per artis" from line 663 from book 6 of the Aeneid by the Roman poet Virgil. Good original condition. The Soho Mint was created by Matthew Boulton in 1788 in his Soho Manufactory in Handsworth, West Midlands, England. A mint was erected at the manufactory containing eight machines, to his own patent design,[2] driven by steam engine, each capable of striking 70 to 85 coins per minute. This is a fine example of that output. Metal surfaces showing signs of abrasion. Diameter 6.5 cm. As we are based in Northern Ireland, our store is still regarded as part of the EU Single Market.
