Description: Likely dating 1960's, this Mexico City Matl Salas pin has a large flower and flowerpot with a mosaic of turquoise, coral, and obsidian. The stem is a pyramidal amethyst, and there are turquoise and coral cabochons throughout. Hand-wrought and magnificent. Matilde Poulat studied painting at the San Carlos Academy of Art, and was a painter and designer when she opened her shop in 1934. Her trademark "Matl" appeared on her work. Known for her folk art designs and unique, unmistakable style, Poulat worked with her nephew, Ricardo Salas. After Poulat's death in 1960, Salas opened his own shop, continuing to produce his aunt's designs as well as creating his own. He is deceased now, as well. Measures 3 1/8" tall, 1 3/4" wide. Weight is 17.3 grams. Signed and hallmarked with an early "Matl Salas Mexico". In excellent vintage condition. Pin closes with a roller.
