Description: This sale is for an antique Italian Mascaron door knocker circa the early 1900s from Florence Italy. The baroque-style antique door knocker is crafted from solid brass/bronze. It has an intricately detailed, unique design featuring the Medici family coat of arms, a mascaron with a Grotesque wild man at the top, two naked Cherubs surrounding what appears to be a turtle in the middle and a ram's head and horns at the bottom. The function of the macaron was originally to frighten awy evil spirits so that they would not enter the building. .We found no identifying marks on the piece. The cast metal door knocker will last a lifetime and will add a touch of history and sophistication to your home. The 11 inch long piece has a hefty weight of 4 pounds, 10 ounces. It comes with the original brass plate that attaches to the door underneath the knocker as well as hardware to attach the knocker to the door (2 long screws to pass through a hole on each of the wild man's ears). The hinge is strong and works well. There are a few spots of white paint around the wild man's ears (see listing photo number 4).
