Description: "Maryland Cracker Barrel" published Feb. March 1997. Special edition featuring Startown one of the lesser known towns in Washington County. Also Reid and Paramount. Also a great article on the Mountain House (South Mountain Inn etc.) including a reenactment there in the 1960s. The South Mountain House was witness to the desperate attempt by Robert E Lee's troops to block the much larger invading Northern Army from reaching what would become Antietam battlefield. Lee was in Maryland hoping to gain recruits and liberate the state from the occupying Northern Army. It would take decades for farmers to recover from their loses during this war. A letter that was written at the time that I found in a relative's attic tells about Union troops confiscating their neighbor's horses, wagons, crops and food with no compensation, while Confederate troops tended to pay for what they took. Lee ordered his troops not to burn or loot and to pay for what they needed. Unfortunately the payment was in nearly worthless Confederate money. Confederate troops did the same thing at our family store in Hagerstown on the corner of Howard street and South Potomac street. Pictured in a photo on page 32 is my brother Tim Bikle small guy lower right corner, my cousin Mack Hutto by fireplace helping wounded soldier and Mr Darby acting as surgeon. Mr Darby was accused of shooting it out with a felon on Antietam street in Hagerstown a few years after this photo was taken. Also some local recipes!. Lots of historic photos in this 39 page new condition magazine. A great anniversary gift!
