This set comes in its original carton. Intended as an electric train “that any child could afford,” big retailers like Sears, Ward’s and J.C. Penney once offered sets like this one as budget-priced alternatives to the more expensive Lionel and American Flyer sets they sold. This set includes an 898 0-4-0 pressed steel locomotive, a 6-inch lithographed 551 “rivet litho” Tender, a 6-inch lithographed 555 C&S Refrigerator Car, a 6-inch lithographed 552 C.R.I. & P. gondola, a 6-inch lithographed 553 Santa Fe tank car, and a 6-inch lithographed 556 New York Central caboose. (For more information on Marx’s 6-inch lithographed cars see The Definitive Guide to Marx Trains by Walt Hiteshew.)The locomotive has been restored to “like new” appearance and operating condition. The 6-inch lithographed cars have all been converted from 4 wheels to 8 wheels by mounting them onto frames with 8-wheel swivel G-trucks with automatic tilt couplers. (The G-trucks are held in place by brass eyelets which were pressed on by a brake press and look like they had been factory-installed.) This customized set is being sold “as is.” The locomotive has been bench tested: the headlight lights and the motor runs strong and should give many years of faithful service. Please note: this set is an adult collectible and is NOT being sold as a toy for children to play with. This customized set comes from a non-smoking household.
