MARTYRS of The Oblong & Little Nine DeCost Smith Limited First Edition Mohicans

Description: LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF 1,000 NUMBERED COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 854. HARDCOVER WITH DUST JACKET. DUST JACKET: INTERIOR OF DUST JACKET HAS TAPE ALONG TOP EDGE WHERE IT WAS NOT PLACED CORRECTLY ON THE BOOK AND OVERHUNG ABOUT 1/4 INCH. MINIMAL PAPER LOSS ON THE EDGES OF THE DUST JACKET BUT CREASING VISIBLE ACROSS THE TOP 1/4 INCH. AGE RELATED PAPER TONING. THE BOOK IS NEAR FINE BUT WITH ISSUES WORTH NOTING. MINOR SURFACE RUBBING TO BOARDS AND BOTTOM 1/4 INCH SHOWS FADING WHERE IT HAD NOT BEEN COVERED BY THE MIS-LAID DUST JACKET. BOOK SHOWS AGE RELATED PAPER TONING TO PAGES. NO WRITING, NO TEARS AND NO CREASES. AGE RELATED DISCOLORATION, MOST NOTABLE ALONG THE FRONT AND REAR FOLDS. THE BIGGEST CONDITION ISSUE IS THAT THE BOOK REMAINS UNREAD. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE A LARGE NUMBER OF PAGES REAMAIN UNCUT WHILE THE REST PROVIDE THAT ATTRACTIVE ROUGH EDGED LOOK. WHAT THIS MEANS TO THE UNINITIATED IS THAT, IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO READ THIS BOOK, YOU WILL HAVE TO FIRST SPEND SOME TIME SEPARATING THE PAGES WITH A BOOK KNIFE. THE OTHER CONDITION ISSUE IS THAT THE ROUGH CUT PAGE EDGES DO NOT HAVE THE PROTECTION OF THE ADJACENT PAGES BEING IDENTICAL SO THAT THE EXPOSED ROUGH EDGES COLLECT DUST AND HAVE DISCOLORED. Red dye used on the top pages remains very bright. The book follows the mishandling of the Mohican tribe by the governments of the United States and Canada. Their abuse can be traced primarily to their unwillingness to fight wars, allowing the greedy to steal from them, and their maintenance of neutrality during British and American border warfare. "Their persecutions and martyrdom begins in the early 1700's and ends with the burning of their last mission at Fairfield, Ontario, Canada in 1813. The book is written by artist and historian DeCost Smith, who was an adopted member of the Onondaga Tribe. PLEASE USE ZOOM FUNCTION ON ALL PHOTOS Paper Knife: The terms paper knife and letter opener are often used interchangeably to refer to a knife-like desktop tool. In truth, they are actually for different functions and were in use at different times. Paper knives are used for cutting open the pages of hand-produced books where the folding of printed sheets creates some closed edges that require severing of the paper before reading. Letter openers "evolved" from paper knives into longer, blunter blades for the sole purpose of opening envelopes. Paper knives are no longer in common use, except perhaps by antiques enthusiasts. 7for40EPLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required. Thank you
