Downes Bennington NH 1887 Billhead*Samuel Dennis Downes was a landlord, savings bank treasurer, town clerk, justice of the peace, postmaster and country store owner in his time in Francetown, NH. Detailed info on Mr. Downes' timeline is fairly scarce. An 1891 entry from a proposal to write a book on the history of Francetown (Whom the Downes family name was prominent) reads in part: “The Brick Store” as it was called, now known as the “Downes Store'' was built in 1856. The previous structure was built in 1814 by Col. William Bixby. He is authority for saying there were three stores built in the village that year. Col. Bixby was long in trade here. Samuel D. occupied in at the time of the fire, and rebuilt on the spot. This is one of the largest and most commodious country stores now in this vicinity.This piece is part of a large collection of business billheads and letterheads and are believed to be related to his country store and are addressed to nearby Bennington, NHOn heavy watermarked paper stock. Showing minor signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. Expected fold creases from posting. No major issues to note. Eye-catching mixed bold type faces / fonts and neat hand writing. All text are legible. Overall, clean and in good to very good condition. Will display well in your collection.
