Description: Rare pair of Signed Martin Bentio Marbro Amethyst Cut to Clear Crystal Lamps Acid etched signature of Martin Benito, C F (for Cristal Freres), Marbro, and Made in France The Crystal Urns were created by master crystal sculpture Martin Benito and signed by him. The additional "CF" inscription indicates Mr. Benito made these for Cristal Freres The amethyst crystal is very rare - especially made into lamps - and has the signature 32-point stars that Mr. Benito is famous for. Not sure of the date of of the making of the cystal urns - but believe the lamps were created by Marbro in the 1960s From the personal home of esteemed Atlanta and Palm Beach decorator and store owner Hillary Flack (who recently passed away) These lamps are hand blown and heavy. Each lamp weighs 13 pounds. The lamps have double sockets with pull chains. Note that one pull chain on one lamp is more goldish and one is more bronzish They are 29.5" H to top of socket Martin Benito Martin Benito began his apprenticeship as a crystal cutter at the age of 14. Gifted and determined, he started his own company in 1952. He developed the characteristic "Cristal Benito" 32-point star, seen on many creations. To create these astonishing pieces, he perfected both the grinding wheels, used to cut crystal, and the crystal sculpture techniques, cutting the crystal as deeply as possible, to the very limit of its resistance, in order to enhance the luster, the shine, and the infinite reflections he imagined. Today regarded as the finest crystal to be found. Marbro Company The Marbro company (1945-1990) was headquartered in Los Angeles. The company was founded after World War I by Morris Markoff and his brother (with the company name Marbro coming from the "Markoff brothers"). They specialized in a wide selection of antiques and decorative arts and accessories, but are best known for their lamps. Marbro hand-made custom lamps for Beverly Hills celebrities and movie stars. The quality of Marbro lamps was (and remains today) unmatched in the industry. The lamps used parts sourced from all over the world and then were assembled in the Marbro shop in LA. Their crystal came from France and Germany. The brass used for their lamps was stained with a tint that was homemade and a guarded secret in the industry. Lamps would also be made from sculptures that customers brought in to the shop. Once the lamp bodies arrived, a group of Marbro employees would make the bases, spin the metal caps, make the shades, and do the painting and tinting. With the help of about 20-40 true world class artisans, metal workers, finishers and hand made shade makers, they produced lamps and shades that were truly some of the last of their kind art.
