An unusual novel, based apparently on a true story and set in contemporary fascist Italy, about a woman with a dual personality caused by her traumatic first experiences of sex as a teenager, being raped by her husband on their wedding night, after witnessing her father in a passionate, adulterous embrace with a local peasant woman in a hut in the woods. As an adult she spends half her time living a prudish, modest, religiously devoted, highly respectable existence, and the other half as the passionate, violent lover of the leader of a gang of thieves, conscious in neither state of her other self until the reappearance of her teenage daughter causes the two to merge. It was successfully adapted for film in 1945, directed by Arthur Crabtree.
