The cartoons possess the rare ability to expose the nub of a situation in a few pen strokes, though, and while Hempel doesn't always operate in the same social comment territory, comparisons with Jules Feiffer are not misplaced. The one-pagers are backed up by short Tug & Buster strips. While excellent in their own title, they here lack breathing space and are vehicles for gags that could have been applied to anyone.
