Description: Beautiful fold-out ethnographic and historical map of the North Pole regions. This handsome map is lithographed in full color on two sides and opens to a generous 23" x 30". One side traces the routes of various explorers through the northern reaches of our planet. It is drawn on a scale of 1:8.721,000, and includes the Arctic Ocean, Iceland, Greenland, Baffin Bay, Canada's Queen Elizabeth Islands, Alaska, Chukchi Sea, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Spitzbergen, and the Denmark Sea. Named explorers include Amundsen, Peary, Byrd, Franklin, Dezhnev, Hall, Henson, Ellsworth, Nobile, and more. The other side of the map depicts various tribal groups in the North Pole region, including the Lapp, Nenets, West Greenland, Polar, Baffin Island, Central Canadian, Evenk, Yakut, Chukchi, North Alaskan, Aleut, and Kutchin, along with Eskimo, Inuit, Athabascan, and Algonkian language boundaries. The map was prepared by the National Geographic Society, and it was published as a supplement to the February 1983 National Geographic Magazine. The cover artwork illustrates two native masks, on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
