The flag design consists of the state coat of arms of Maine centered on a blue field. The coat of arms design consists of a farmer and seafarer figure standing on either side of a shield. The two figures represent the fact that the state relies upon agriculture and the oceans great bounty for its survival. In the center of the shield, a moose, which is the Maine state animal is depicted resting under an eastern white pine tree, which is the state tree. Above the shield, a five-pointed star outlined with a halo of rays represents the North Star while a ribbon just below the star bears the state motto Dirigo which is a Latin word that means I Lead, hence the North Star imagery. A ribbon just below the shield bears the word Maine. The colors for the coat of arms have never been officially specified by law, so color variations will be noticed in Maine flags from one manufacturer to the next. The blue background, however, is to be the same as that of the United States flag according to the official description. Before 1909, the Maine state flag consisted simply of a buff-colored background, a green pine tree shape, and a five-pointed blue star that was meant to represent the North Star.
