This instrument provides the rate of speed at which a piece of music is to be played. The metronome speed is indicated at the start of classical and semi-classical compositions. If, for instance, it is shown as 84, slide the weight on the pendulum until it rests directly opposite the number 84 on the scale. Then set the pendulum in motion. The speed at which it ticks indicates the pace at which the piece of music is to be played, with one tick representing a quarter note. If the composition is marked 84 = d, this means that it is to be played with one half note to each tick, and so on. CAUTION: Wind the metronome slowly and stop when resistance is felt. When the metronome is not in use, move the sliding weight to 80 and replace the cover.Johann Nepomuk Maelzel is recognized as metronome builder round 1820, r. a patent that Maelzel had registered in Paris. The metronome consists of an inverted pendulum. The pendulum strikes in many instances again and forth and in every cycle there are two really audible clicks. By adjustment of a weight on the pendulum the pendulum time can be changed. On the Inside parchment paper with the printing of the Italian tune phrases presto, allegro, andante, adagio, larghetto and largo with the print at the backside of a small drawing/symbol.
