Description: CDV Civil War era couple ID James & Ophelia A. Kingsley North, by N.P. Jones, Madison WI Mrs. North appears more relaxed here having her picture made than does her husband. Jim sits on a chair that seems too low for him, and wears a somewhat rought-cut suit of clothes. His hands are folded in his lap. Ophelia wears a lovely dress with a belt; the buckle accentuating her small waist. The dress is highlighted by strips of dark velvet at the hem and sleeve and across the bodice. I like the positioning of the window backdrop. It feels natural, and increases the depth of the shot, causing us to concentrate more on our subjects in the foreground. On reverse is written, in pencil at the top:"James & Ophelia North" Printed on reverse is:"N.P. JonesPhotographer,Mills' Block, Madison, Wisconsin" I am lucky that I have some other photos from the same family, so I was able to compare family names with some on other photos. What I have found is that the woman of this couple is Ophelia A. Kingsley North. Ophelia was born in Michigan on June 26, 1841. She died May 1, 1880, at the age of 38. Ophelia's husband, James North, was born February 9, 1840 and died in June 26, 1906. They are both buried in Kingsley Cemetery, Waunakee, Dane County, Wisconsin. They had 2 children: Cora B. North Kelting (1870-1898) and Amelia Birdella North (1879-1895). Some fading to image. Light soiling to image and card. All 4 corners have been cut round. Card measures about 4 x 2.5 inches, photo is about 3.5 x 2.125 inches. My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able. There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process. I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases, so please check out my other listings. I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
