Description: ROBERT CHARLES WINTHROP (May 12, 1809 – November 16, 1894) was an American lawyer and Whig Party politician who represented Massachusetts in the United States House and Senate from 1840 to 1851. Winthrop of Brookline (Boston), MA, writes to an apparent agent of encyclopedia publisher Evert Duyckinck, who, along with his brothers, published The Cyclopedia of American Literature, 4 pp, 5 ¼ x 7 ¾, February 3rd, 1873. Winthrop provides copies of his literary work for publication to Duyckinck. “...I am glad to learn...that Mr. Duyckinck’s excellent cyclopedia is to have a new edition...The principal [writings] I have since published in a separate form are: “An address at the opening of our Charity Bureau; “An Introductory Lecture to the course of Massachusetts early history;“A tribute to my friend Hon. John Pendleton Kennedy of Baltimore; “The Eulogy on George Peabody at his funeral; “An oration on the 250th Anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers; “A tribute to Walter Scott on the centennial of his birthday. “I send you all these & shall be pleased to have them find a place in the Philadelphia Library of you have no other disposition for them... “The Reports of the Peabody Trustees of Southern Education contain addresses of my own as matter of preamble to Dr. Sear’s account of our work. One of them contain a supplementary tribute to Mr. Peabody & another a Tribute to our [pleasant] associate, the late Admiral Farragut... “My most continuous work has been in connection with our old Historical Society & is incorporated into its...proceedings & its volumes of collections. “All this will show my way of life sufficiently... “Robert Winthrop” Winthrop was born into a prominent Boston political family, descended from colonial governors Thomas Dudley and John Winthrop. After a prestigious education at Boston Latin School and Harvard College, he studied law with Daniel Webster and was admitted to the bar in 1831.
