Description: Lucien Coutaud (1904 - 1977) Le Taureau Blanc - plate X etching, 1956 signed and inscribed bon a tirer lower right margin recto, apart from the edition of 150 inscribed X upper left margin recto plate size 8" x 5¼" (20.3 x 13.3 cm.) paper size 12¾" x 10" (32.4 x 25.4 cm.) published by L'Imprimerie Nationale pour la Société des Bibliophiles Comtois, France Condition: unframed and in generally good condition as shown The bon a tirer master impression of one of the fourteen plates from Coutaud's illustrations for the bibliophile edition of Voltaire's philosophical novel. The Bon à Tirer (French: 'good to pull') designation, commonly seen abbreviated as "B.A.T.", is signed by the artist on the ultimate print they deem perfect during the trial proofing process. This work is then used by the printer as the master reference for the printing of the full edition. All subsequent impressions are compared to the B.A.T. for quality and those which deviate are destroyed. The careful consideration given by an artist to the B.A.T. impression and its unique place in the printmaking process make them prized by collectors.
