German Notgeld I've translated the notes and envelope as follows: Note #1: The Danes are coming Note #2: The first shot Note #3: The Lütjenburgers move out Note #4: The alleged Danes Envelope (envelope is written in phonetically spelled Low German, so I can't guarantee this translation is completely accurate, but I believe it's mostly correct): The Buttermilk War at Lütjenburg - took place in April 1848 The war between the Danes and the Schleswig-Holsteiners had broken out. The Danes had the upper hand [Böwelhand - presumably a dialect spelling of the Dutch bovenhand] at sea and sent the people on the Baltic Sea into an uproar, as they could easily land anywhere. That was the evening of April 21st, when a man from Todendorf, completely out of breath, came running into Lütjenburg and said some Danes in a boat had landed, and that they had spoken to an old woman, who however was unable to understand them, and had run away in fear. They were certainly spies, people said, who were supposed to find out if soldiers were located here. Their ship lay further out on the water, and in the morning we would have the Danes at our throat. Thereupon all of Lütjenburg went into an uproar, and when a shot also rang out here, which a cobbler boy fired off at the neighbor's cat, things really got crazy. Nobody slept a wink that night. Fast couriers on horse were sent to Plön and Preetz, asking them to come and help. Early the next morning the Lütjenburger civil defense marched out to search in the woods near Hohwacht and thereabouts, where they believed the spies had hidden themselves. They searched for hours but couldn't find anything, until finally the message came that they should all return home; it had been a false alarm. The men who had landed in Todendorf spoke Frisian, and they had been sent from the ship to get buttermilk for the many piglets they had on board and intended to bring to Fehmarn. So the vernacular tale is still told today in the area of Lütjenburg. The teacher a. D. Friedrich Witt has even made a comedy in two acts from this Döntje [short, humorous anecdote told in Low German dialect]. Fun to tell - but true!
