Description: Lot 8 Antique Postcards St Stephens Allenton Missouri Local History Meramec River Eureka Pacific Interesting lot of 8 postcards from the St Stephens on the Hill mission and retreat that was located in Allenton, Missouri. Cards are all essentially 5 9/16” x 3 9/16”. There are several featuring the Meramec river. The guy in the boat is most likely Reverend Henry Mizner, who ran the place for many years. It was an Episcopal retreat/camp for children from St. Louis city. Apparently he was a character, and liked to hold sermons in a barn-like structure where a big door could be opened and congregants could see a view of the river. If local dogs or children or birds or mice wandered in, they were welcome too. No sanctuary was denied, and would even be given communion “if they could be made to sit still long enough”.
