Description: Probably one of the toughest continentals to find of these historic Los Angeles venues! LOS ANGELES MEMORIAL COLISEUM & SPORTS ARENAThe Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the adjacent Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena were two of the most iconic sports venues in Southern California, both playing significant roles in the region’s rich sports history, including hosting major teams and the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games.Los Angeles Memorial ColiseumOpened in 1923, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the most storied stadiums in the world, with a seating capacity that has fluctuated over the years but typically holds around 77,000. Originally built as a tribute to U.S. veterans of World War I, the Coliseum has been home to numerous professional and college football teams, including the USC Trojans, who have played their home games there since 1923. The Los Angeles Rams also called the Coliseum home during multiple stints: from 1946-1979 and again from 2016-2019 upon their return to Los Angeles before moving into SoFi Stadium. The Coliseum also hosted the Los Angeles Raiders from 1982 to 1994, and it briefly served as the home field for the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960 during the team’s inaugural AFL season. The stadium’s most famous non-football tenant may have been the Los Angeles Dodgers, who played at the Coliseum from 1958 to 1961 while awaiting the completion of Dodger Stadium. The Coliseum’s unique dimensions for baseball led to some extraordinary moments, including the 1959 World Series. On the international stage, the Coliseum was the central venue for the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. In 1932, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track and field events, helping to establish Los Angeles as a major sports city. When the Olympics returned in 1984, the Coliseum again took center stage, making it the first stadium in history to host two Summer Olympic Games. It is also set to play a role in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics.Los Angeles Memorial Sports ArenaLocated next to the Coliseum, the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena opened in 1959 and became a versatile indoor sports and entertainment venue. With a seating capacity of around 15,000, the Sports Arena was home to several professional basketball teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers (1960–1967) and the Los Angeles Clippers (1984–1999), as well as the USC Trojans men's basketball team. It also hosted the Los Angeles Kings for their inaugural season in 1967–68 before the completion of the Forum. The Sports Arena was the site of major boxing events, concerts, political conventions, and even WrestleMania. Though it didn’t receive the same long-term attention as the Forum or Staples Center, it played a crucial role in Los Angeles sports for over five decades. The Sports Arena was demolished in 2016 to make way for the Banc of California Stadium, the new home of the MLS team Los Angeles FC. While the Coliseum continues to stand as a historic sports venue, the legacy of both structures is deeply intertwined with the history of sports in Los Angeles and the city’s Olympic heritage.
