Description: This auction is for a nice 1840 PRINT OF "LOCH KATRINE: LOOKING TOWARDS ELLEN'S ISLE". I've looked at other copies of this print on ebay, and all I could find were black and white copies. THIS PRINT IS IN COLOR! As selling prints is out of my usual selling realm, don't ask me if the print is hand-colored, colorized, etc., as I do not know. First, some background on acquiring this print. Last year, my youngest sister had to move from a house to an apartment, and drastically had to downsize. She gave me a huge canvas bag filled with different items, and said "see what you can do"...HA! This was purchased by her on a trip to Bermuda. Considering the topic of the print, I am guessing that her then boyfriend/husband (I can't remember what year they were married) purchased the print, as his last name is part Scottish. There is paperwork included (pic #17), and by looking at it, they obviously overpaid for the print...wildly so! It was purchased at a place called Pegasus in Bermuda, in July of 1993 (thirty years ago). They paid $50 at that time. For what it's worth, there is a "certificate of authenticity" signed and embossed on a paper attached to the back of the print stating that this is a genuine early print, and that it is certified to have been published circa 1840 (pic #15). Now...on to the print. The size of the color part of the print itself is 7 1/16" X 4 7/16" (basically, 7 X 4 ½ inches). The print is matted, but the mat will have to be replaced, as there is a crease in the middle top section of the mat (pic #3), and a medium sized ding along the bottom left quadrant (pic #4). The print is still wrapped up in plastic, just the way it was purchased, and it won't be taken out of the wrap by me. The print looks to be in excellent condition. However, I cannot tell what lies underneath the matted section of the print. Is the print page cut down, is it marked up, faded...I don't know!?! I think the auction price is low enough for you to take a chance. The title is under the print (pic #10). Under the title and to the right, it says "Lady Of The Lake Canto II" (pic #11). This is in reference to the Sir Walter Scott poem "The Lady of the Lake", first published in 1810. The poem consists of six cantos, and this refers to the second one. The poem was the inspiration for the print. From what I understand, the print was drawn my Thomas Allom, whose name appears under the print in the bottom left corner (#12). Allom was an English architect, artist and topographical illustrator. The engravers name, John Charles (J.C.) Varrall, appears below the print in the bottom right corner (#13). I do not know if this appeared in a publication or what publication this first appeared in if it did. This will be sent in a sturdy flat box that I use to ship vinyl records in. I don't ship items in envelopes, and sellers that do are cheap and lame! If you have any questions about this item, please feel free to email me. Also, check out my other auctions going on NOW of various other items of interest. Thanks again for looking...during these most very...very...very...troubled times... 6-4-23
