I see smugglers in the distance! / Winsor McCay. Creator(s): McCay, Winsor, artist Date Created/Published: c1910. Summary: Twelve-frame comic strip shows Little Nemo and his companions, the dwarf Flip and the cannibal Impy, flying into New York in their dirigible space ship from a trip to Mars. They are intercepted by customs agents and then decide to land at West Point instead of New York Harbor. They fly up the Hudson River, but land in the Sing Sing Penitentiary by mistake. As usual, Little Nemo awakens in the morning in his own bed. Little Nemo, first published by Winsor McCay in October 1905 in The New York Herald, featured a small boy who traveled in his dreams each night to another world, Slumberland, where he had fabulous adventures. The strip was notable for its delicate drawings, fantastic architecture, and brilliant use of color. In 1911, McCay left the Herald to work for William Randolph Hearst, but before he left, Little Nemo toured all the cities of America where the comic strip was published. Notes: Title from item.
