LIONEL 10-Panel drop-end 40' Gondola ~ Lionel Blue ~ Thumbtacks Rd# 6112

Description: We try to be Friendly to our international customers especially with our: UPS Standard to Canada,These Lionel models appear to be modeled after the 40' Wabash gondolas from the early 1940's. The Wabash solid-floor gondolas were indeed of the 10-Panel 40' design, but they had fixed rather than drop-Ends. Based on data in Wabash equipment inventory documents and a stenciling diagram, cars 13500-13749 were built during mid to late 1944, and 13750-14849 were added during 1945-46. All were apparently built at the Wabash Shops in Decatur, IL. These 40' Gondola cars inherited trucks from retired cars and so some had Andrews trucks, and some had AAR/Bettendorf type. Originally built as composite gondolas the wooden sides needed 10-panels to provide sufficient strength, when they were rebuilt, they apparently retained the 10-panels.and continued in revenue service into the 1960's.
