He was a grandnephew of Henry Varnum Poor, who was a founder of the predecessor firm to Standard & Poor's. He was also a potter, with ceramics in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and ceramics designed for Radio City Music Hall. He has also worked in the Whitney Museum and Phillips Collection collections. Poor's papers are in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian.The Limited Editions Club of New York was started in 1929 by George Macy. At 29 years old, he was an avid reader who wanted to make his living from books. His business revolved around publishing beautifully illustrated classic titles in relatively small quantities, with club members paying a subscription.Today, the Limited Editions Club (LEC) is an important part of the rare book business, and collectors adore its books. From 1929 to 1985, the LEC published 548 titles.
