("Rusty") Calley, Jr., guilty of premeditated murder in the village of Mylai Four on March 16, 1968. "Americans responded to the verdict with unprecedented commotion. Between the beginning of the investigation, in May 1969, and the conclusion of the trial, Lieutenant Calley's name became synonymous with "massacre" all over the world. "Lieutenant Calley maintained a public silence throughout. But he spent one hundred days in private and detailed conversation about himself with John Sack. This, then, is Rusty Calley's own story -- his only authorized autobiography. These are his words, delivered from his lips and his conscience." Lieutenant Calley was initially sentenced to life in prison, but was release to house arrest under orders by President Richard Nixon. His initial life sentence was modified to a term of 20 years and then further reduced to ten; in the end, Calley served only three years of house arrest for the murders. William Calley died on April 28, 2024, at the age of 80, but his death was not reported until July 29, 2024, when it was discovered in public records.
