Licinius I - CLASSIC Jupiter holding Victory on globe [RIC VI 73] SHIPS FREE!

Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move my collections along to new homes. Here is a really nice 22mm bronze follis issued under Licinius who ruled the empire from 308-324 AD. He was a colleague and rival of Constantine I with whom he co-authored the Edict of Milan that granted official tolerance to Christians in the Roman Empire. He was defeated in battle in 324 AD and then ordered to be executed by Constantine I. He ruled during an interesting time of internal conflict and civil wars and his life and reign are worth a read! With fine details on both sides, this coin was minted between 313-317 AD in Heraclea. The obverse displays a strong laurel crowned emperor bust right with a crisp legend in Latin reading IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG. The reverse has a full classic palate that shows Jupiter standing left, with a chlamys over shoulder, holding Victory on a globe and sceptre, with an eagle with wreath at left foot. There is a strong clear legend reading IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG and officina symbol ”A” in right field. The Heraclea mintmark SMHT shows clearly in the exergue below. The coin has toned to an even medium dark bronze patina and shows in the reference books as RIC VI 73 and in Sear as 15240. I photographed under various light intensities to show the details (no Photoshop). This coin shows in hand under sunlight as the darker photos - nice patina and medium dark bronze. I often receive questions as to which websites I use and recommend for research and while there are several good ones out there, I particularly like Wildwinds.com and numismatics.org and also forumancientcoins.com. I have often been asked what could these type coins buy in Roman days? At the time of this issue, one of these would buy enough bread for two days for a family or two liters of common wine so these type coins were used frequently for daily needs. As I bought most of my coins literally decades ago, I can offer them at the best available price you will find for the condition so my collection does not wind up in my “estate” sale! As everything needs to find a good home, I also provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US. **AS I AM FINALLY DISTRIBUTING MY COINS FROM OVER 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING YOU WILL FIND AFFORDABLE COINS OF INTEREST AT MY SITE FOR THOSE JUST GETTING INTO ANCIENT COINS AS WELL AS FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTOR – ALL PROVIDED WITH CONTEXT IN HISTORY. CLICK ON “SELLER’S OTHER ITEMS” AND “SAVE SELLER” SO YOU CAN LOOK BACK EACH WEEK AS I WILL BE POSTING MORE COINS.**
