Description: This is an incredible, near complete set with 45 of 46 volumes (missing Vol. 23) from 1902. It is very rare for a trade version, not ex-library, to be available. It is in beautiful, vintage condition, but please review all photos and read the condition description as each book was reviewed individually. The first 40 volumes alone are more than 16,000 pages so of course there may be other flaws that were not observed. There are no ownership marks in these books, and there is no writing or highlighting. There are a lot of pages that are unopened (not cut). Most of the wear on these books is on the spine as seen in the photos; interior pages are very well preserved. Each book has a tissue guard with an illustration at the front (often vibrant color or photogravure), and they are in excellent condition (no tears or creases as commonly seen). There are other illustrations throughout book as well as printed signatures from the authors. Editor Charles Dudley Warner worked with an Advisory Council which is also printed in each volume (see photo). There is a blue-stamped number "25" on the last page of the first volume, not sure of meaning. Here is an excerpt from Editor Charles Dudley Warner's Preface, Volume I: "The plan of this Work is simple, and yet it is novel. In its distinctive features it differs from any compilation that has yet been made. Its main purpose is to present to American households a mass of good reading. But it goes much beyond this. For in selecting this reading it draws upon all literatures of all time and of every race, and thus becomes a conspectus of the thought and intellectual evolution of man from the beginning. Another and scarcely less important purpose is the interpretation of this literature in essays by scholars and authors competent to speak with authority. The title, "A Library of the World's Best Literature," is strictly descriptive. It means that what is offered to the reader is taken from the best authors, and is fairly representative of the best literature and of all literatures. It may be important historically, or because at one time it expressed the thought and feeling of a nation, or because it has the character of universality, or because the readers of to-day will find it instructive, entertaining, or amusing..."
