These trains are modeled primarily on European and American narrow gauge prototypes in 1:22.5 scale currently known as G Gauge. “The G designation was an imaginative designation utilized to better promote the line and to distinguish it from other large scale trains. In this country, LGB was orignally designated by the first United States Distributor, Chas. C. Merzbach Company, as K Gauge to emphasize its king size. However, in the mid-1970s the designation was changed to G to bridge more appropriately the German (gross) and English (giant) language barrier. These size designations, with the fact that LGB runs on track with the same distance between the rails as 1 Gauge (45mm), have caused considerable confusion among collectors and modelers as to just what gauge LGB really is. …In the United States, many collectors still refer to LGB as 1 Gauge, while freethinkers have gone so far as to give it a “Gm” Gauge.” Confused yet?
