Description: Antique S. Silliman & Co. Turned Wood Inkwell with Decorated Gilt Stenciling An estate purchase: Rare and beautiful turned wood (treenware) inkwell. Circa 1850 It measures 4 1/2" across by 2 3/4" high with an ogee profile and three fine bands incised at the waist. The wood is beautifully marbled and would likely be faux grain painted by hand. Around the base are three finely hand stenciled designs depicting a quill pen under a leafy branch flanked by two scroll tips. The top is recessed; please note some wear to the black color. There are four holes for quill pens. There is a fourth tiny hole that held a thin rope with a stopper attached. This is no longer there. When I purchased the inkwell there was a stopper inside the well, but it appears to be too small but will include it. It looks to be made of wood and cork. I don’t know what is the correct stopper type for these inkwells. See photo. The bottom has some of its original red cloth covering and a green label that reads Manufactured by S. Silliman & Co. Chester, Conn. There were three feather pens in it at time of purchase. I will include with the well along with the stopper. Overall, the inkwell is in good condition with only minor knicks, no cracks or chips to the wood. I took photos as I turned the object. Thanks for looking. Note: In the 1800s, the S. Silliman Company in Chester, Connecticut made itself known nationwide for its wooden inkstands and inkwells. It is said that Abraham Lincoln had a Silliman inkwell in his Springfield, Illinois, law office, and in 1837 a Silliman inkwell was gifted to President Martin Van Buren.
