Description: LEV TCHISTOVSKY (1902-1969) fine Russian / French original oil painting ORCHIDS Helpful Links Lev Tchistovsky "Orchids" Item Description ARTIST: Lev Tchistovsky (1902-1969) Russian / French TITLE: "Still Life Of Orchids" SIGNED: lower right MEDIUM: oil on board SIZE: 42cm x 37cm inc frame CONDITION: very good (frame / mount has some staining from age) DETAIL: With provenance from Frost & Reed circa 1965 - a super original still life of orchids by Tchistovsky. Lev Tchistovsky was born in Psakov in 1902. He enrolled in the Fine Art School in Saint Petersburg, where he was tutored by acclaimed artists Eberling and Savinsky. After graduating in 1925, he moved to Rome, where he studied at Fine Arts School. While in Venice, he met his lifelong partner, artist Irene Klestova. After studying at the same school as Lev, by the time they met, she became a successful artist who frequently exhibited her work at Salon des Independants in Paris. They married in Paris in 1926, and Tchistovsky opened an art studio on Impasse du Rouet. He was friends with several artists, including Tamara de Lempicka and Andre Breton. In 1930, Tchistovsky became a member of the Salon des Independants and often exhibited there. The painter avoided the pictorial styles of the time preferred by his contemporaries and excelled in classical realism. Throughout his career, he strived for perfection, as he attempted to accurately capture the sensual eroticism in females in his work. Highly popular his paintings were sought after by various galleries in France, England, and America. His work featured portraits of numerous celebrities, icons, mythological scenes, still lives, and flowers. Today Lev Tchistovsky's artworks are part of several major private and public collections, including the castle of Cagnes Sur Mer in Nice, the Villefranche de Rouergue near Cenevieres, Robert Maxwell's collection, and Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
