I am a relative of the author, and can verify that author Judith Mockler went to every depth and detail to research maps, genealogy and civil war details relating to the letters, and which lend richness and strength to the original letters. Given the era of war, dangers, and infant postal system of the time, it is amazing that these letters found their intended recipients and that we have this book as a result of one woman's work. From the Foreword (first two paragraphs of 1-1/2 pages): "This book contains letters written by George Herbert Allan Gatchell to his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Cole Gatchell from 1853 through the Civil War to 1865. Several of the letters were written before the Civil War, but the body of the letters covers the years from 1860-1865. The style of the letters has been maintained; there have been no deletions of names or language. Neither punctuation nor spelling corrections have been made. There are approximately 60 of the letters plus a store-keeper's dunning letter and a list of items charged at the store. There are letters from other family members included as well. Hidden for years beneath the boards of a closet, these letters were found in a cardboard box tied with yellow ribbon. They were found in tiny envelopes, some measuring 3 1/4" by 5 12", of stiff paper. Some have stamps and are hand-cancelled. other carry the words "A Soldier's letter". Although they are numbered, their sequence is unreliable so the dates on the letters have determined their order." ....
