There’s mostly devilish Liszt here, with a heavenward nod or two thrown in for good measure. Atypically for Liszt, the so-called Dante Sonata boasts no glittering passagework, yet its basic textures are rooted in octaves, octaves, and more octaves. The trick for the pianist is not to rattle off the music like a 15-minute-plus octave etude, but to transform the piano into a mini-orchestra. That’s precisely what Leif Ove Andsnes does in his performance, making the most of Liszt’s spooky tremolos and chordal cross-rhythms. We could imagine a weightier, bottom-up sonority à la Claudio Arrau, Earl Wild, or Alfred Brendel, but Andsnes truly projects the subtext between the music’s notes. Similarly, Andsnes is attuned to the strange, allusive syntax of Liszt’s late fourth Mephisto Waltz and fourth Valse Oubliée. The lyrical, reflective Élegie is based on a Liszt song, while the Second Mephisto Waltz originally appeared as an orchestral piece. Both are played with stylish intelligence.Leif Ove Andsnes, Liszt* – Piano RecitalLabel: EMI Classics – 7243 5 57002 2 3Format: CD, AlbumCountry: EuropeReleased: 2001Genre: ClassicalStyle: Romantic1 Après Une Lecture Du Dante.
