Description: This Lee Harvey Oswald Russian trade union card is a reproduction. The original card is held at the National Archives. This card was brought back from Russia when Oswald returned to the US. To my knowledge, there are only 2 images of this card... one made from the Dallas police, the other by the Warrenn Commission. Unfortunately, neither image is very sharp or clean. This reproduction is a composite made from the 2 images. I have placed some info below on how the trade unions worked and what the stamps are used for. The stamps are printed to reduce cost. If you want a card with realistic stamps, please contact me. The entire card is handmade to look and feel like an original. I can further age the card if desired. In Soviet Russia, trade union cards and dues stamps played a significant role in the centralized planned economy and the control exerted by the state. 1. Trade Union Cards: - Trade union cards were issued to workers upon joining a trade union, which was mandatory for all workers in the Soviet Union. These cards served as a form of identification and membership proof within the union. - The cards contained personal information about the worker, such as their name, workplace, and union affiliation. - They were used to track and monitor an individual's work history and participation in union activities. - Trade union cards also provided access to various benefits and services, such as healthcare, vacation facilities, and cultural activities, which were provided by the state through the trade unions. 2. Dues Stamps: - Dues stamps were used to indicate that a worker had paid their union dues, which were obligatory in the Soviet Union. - These dues were automatically deducted from a worker's salary and were a significant source of revenue for the trade unions. - The dues stamps were typically affixed to the trade union card as evidence of payment. - Failure to pay union dues could lead to various consequences, including loss of access to benefits and even potential employment issues. In essence, trade union cards and dues stamps were tools used by the Soviet government to maintain control over the labor force, ensure compliance with state policies, and provide a framework for the provision of social services and benefits to workers. They were essential components of the centralized and highly regulated Soviet economic and social system.
