Description: Title: Le Premier (-Second) Volume de la Bible en Francoys, 1521 Author: Catholic Church Publisher: Lyon, [Jacques Sacon] vend Pierre Bailly Condition: Good A scarce early 16th century edition of the first and second volumes of the Bible in French, printed by Jacques Sacon, being a near identical reprint of the Bible Historiale produced by Sacon in 1518, printed this time on behalf of the bookseller Pierre Bailly. This Bible has been printed in a gothic font, in two columns. There are 63 woodcuts in the first volume, and 45 in the second, all decorated with woodcut borders, with some smaller woodcuts and woodcut initials throughout. Of note, there are two full page woodcuts in the first volume, the first depicting Saint Jerome pulling the thorn from the lion’s paw, and the second being a six-panel woodcut of Creation. There are two half page woodcuts in the second volume, the first depicting Adam and Eve in Paradise, and the second, depicting Solomon in bed. Both title pages are lacking, as is the last leaf which includes the colophon. Leaves XCVIII to CIII are lacking in the second volume as well, including the large woodcut of God enthroned. USTC records 22 existing copies of this edition in libraries. The volume has been more recently rebound, with new endpapers. Two volumes bound into one book in folio, (7 of 8)+CXCV, (7 of 8)+ CLXVII of CLXXIII leaves This volume is in good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding. There is some old wear and tear up to leaf II, with old marginal repairs to the first two numbered leaves. There is also a tear to the top of leaf I in the first volume. There is additional wear to the last two leaves, with the corners slightly lacking, though not obscuring any text. There is a repaired tear to leaves XXX-XXXII, with a few letters lost to XXXII. There is a tear to the upper right corner of leaf XCVII in the second volume, with some letter loss. There are some misnumbered leaves.
