Description: Late 19th century Rural Street Scene (possibly Northern Italy) by Robert Frederick Blum 1857-1903, listed New York/Ohio artist, watercolor/pencil on paper, 9 1/2" by 11 1/4" sheet size, 9 1/8" by 11 1/8" sight, signed lower right, Guido (Boston) 23K gilded carved frame with silk mat and gilded fillet under UV plexiglass, 15 3/8" by 18 5/8". Artist studied Art Academy of Cincinnati and Ohio Mechanics Institute, studying under Frank Duveneck with fellow artists John Twachtman and Joseph DeCamp. He went on to study at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1876, returned to Cincinnati 1877, and by 1880's was based in New York City. He traveled to Italy, meeting with Whistler and Duveneck while living in Venice 1885-1886, 1890 traveled to Japan and lived there 2 years, later associating with William Merritt Chase and John Twachtman when he returned to New York City, spending his last years teaching at New York Art Students League, dying there 1903. He was a member of National Academy of Design, Society of American Artists, American Watercolor Society, National Society of Mural Painters, Society of Painters in Pastel. Condition very good, toning and foxing to reverse, sheet hinged to mat, framing with some professional restoration to a corner and minor blemishes.
