Description: Traditionally the Chinese have a profound admiration and affinity for their ancestors. “Ancestor paintings” such as this one, were painted for ancestral worship. It was believed the wisdom and power of the living person resided in their portrait after death. They almost always depicted their subjects sat facing forward, typically seated in a chair with a carpet at their feet. Or in this case, an elaborate foot rest! Which gives a strong indication as to the wealth and standing of the ancestor. Usually, the ancestor is depicted wearing semi-formal gowns with insignia that proclaimed their rank or status. The only differences are gender-related. Women’s feet, considered the most erotic part of the female body, were always hidden; and more often than not women’s hands were hidden as well. This early 20th century example is painted onto paper which has been mounted onto patterned silk. The painting itself has only typical light age related wear, some crinkling etc. The silk backing has a repair to a top corner and a straight tear to the bottom above the scroll bar. Entire scroll measures 148cm x 64cm Painting alone/aperture measures 94cm x 54cm
