Description: Empire Wall Tile Company, Zanesville, OH 1923-1929 Amazing antique scenic tile depicts an American Indian on horseback with many fine details and multiple glaze colors. Measures 11 3/4" x 3/4" thick. Great condition; minor wear. John B. Owens started his business in 1891 and became a celebrated potter of unsurpassed art tiles. He operated the company as Zanesville Tile from 1905-1907. Then in 1909, he opened a new plant and called it the J.B. Owens Floor and Wall Tile Company, before finally incorporating as Empire Floor and Wall Tile Company in 1923.
