LARGE 12'' Antique JAPANESE Meiji TANTO KNIFE Hidden FOLDED FAN Lacquer Scabbard

Description: A super antique Japanese 19th century hidden tanto knife disguised as a fan with a lacquered wood scabbard. These sorts of hidden knives were popular in the Edo and Meiji periods and were carried by women who deemed it too unlady-like to carry open weapons. The forged steel blade was not made for show and was purely designed as a practical, light weapon for a lady to quickly defend her honor with. This wonderful large tanto knife is disguised as an unobtrusive fan, with the scabbard designed to be removed quickly to reveal the steel blade. The scabbard is made of a light wood for ease of carrying and has been carefully lacquered so the center looks like the folds of a paper fan, the end with handle hanging holes for silk string. A great addition to any antique Japanese weapons collection! The fan measures approximately 12 inches long. The blade is about 7 inches long. The knife is in good condition with all over wear. The lacquer has general wear with chipping and rubbing and some repaired drying cracks. There is no hanging string. The blade is in good shape with general wear. Please check all the pictures.
