Development of the .30 caliber carbine round was started in late 1940 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company under an Ordnance Department contract. By late 1941, with war on the horizon, continual refinement of the design was carried out by Frankford Arsenal. By mid-1942, quantity production contracts were given to Western Cartridge Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Remington Arms Co., Kings Mills Ordnance Plant, and Lake City Ordnance Plant. Development of a tracer cartridge for the carbine began in mid-1943 by Remington Arms at the request of the British, and assigned the T24 nomenclature. The round was later standardized by the Ordnance Department in January 1944 with an "M" number, and quantity production was carried out by Remington Arms and the Lake City Ordnance Plant. The Remington carton used the standard black printing on the lid of the carton, where the Lake City carton used an applied label printed in red ink. No printed documentation has been located that explains the label difference, although the Lake City red label carton does seem to be less commonEach "Buy It Now" single purchase is for 3 unassembled cartons with a red LAKE CITY ORDNANCE PLANT TRACER applied label. The lot number is hand stamped on the lid prior to shipping, matching an original box, or if you prefer, I can match the lot number of a spam can or crate that you may have.
